Making Writing Exciting

Brown Paper Laundry Bag Writing Prompt

Waybackstory:

When I was your age I lived at a remote boarding school, all boys, where you had to study Ancient Latin. My room was in an old farmhouse converted to a dormitory, and there were no laundry machines. No machines of any kind, actually, except a large, black, coin operated public telephone on the wall near the front door.

Our laundry went out in canvas bags each week and came back the next week, washed and folded, in brown paper tied with string. Sometimes you’d open your package to unfamiliar looking clothes.

Alex Hiam, Amherst Mass.

Writing Prompt:

Imagine a character (you/first person or they/third person) at an old fashioned boarding school who opens their laundry and is very surprised by what they find inside the brown paper wrappings. Write the scene. Have some fun with it!
